Illuminating Words

Yesterday Editorial Ass had a great post about Toni Morrison; Toni changed 17 words in her new novel, A Grace, and called it a major rewrite.

How much power is there in just a few words? Let’s find out. Grab the book nearest you, turn to page 88 and read the eighth sentence. Then post it in the comments section here. Writers: bonus points if you use material from your own manuscript!

Uncle Li and Dad are talking with Mrs. Findlay, who has her hands way up inside some large brid, stuffing it for tonight's dinner.

You're freaking me out! I grabbed a book I'd stopped reading, turned to page 88 and there was my lost Starbucks card! Clearly a sign from above that I need to spend the day at Starbucks finishing this terrible novel.

Eight sentence on 88th page:
"I think you and I should go to lunch today."

Also freaky because that's what I'd say to you if we didn't live thousands of miles apart!

"Kill it!" a child screamed, and a stick or knife jabbed Heath in the back.
Hard Truth, by Nevada Barr is the book I'm reading. Sounds awful, doesn't it?

CDG - Glad I could help out. Maybe I've perfected remote viewing without even knowing it!

Mom - You need to get some knder, gentler books.

Katie - Is this from your own ms?

Sadly, I'm at work. Thus:

"Follow the same process as defined in step 1."

(First time post, by the way, but I've been enjoying your blog for awhile now...)

"So, the Scarecrow followed him and was admitted to the Great Throne Room, where he saw sitting in the emerald throne, a most lovely Lady."

When's the last time you read Wizard of Oz ??

Mystery John! I don't know who you are but Thank You for being a regular visitor! Do you have a blog we can check out?

Diane - Um, sad to admit, but never... As all the dumbs**t's say, "Loved the movie, though!"

Yes, my love. It's from my wicked cool paranormal YA.

Hi Christy,

Thanks for asking, there are two actually. Well, sort of.

Er.

One is geekuniversalis.com, which is more of a blog-like blog.

The other is ashlandlink.com, which I'm still tinkering with. It's research for that site that led me to your blog. :)
