Thrown to the Librarians!

Today was a mini publishing milestone – an invitation to sign books in the Flux booth at the Public Library Association’s National Conference in the end of March. What a thrill!

Having never been in the presence of more than two at once, I’m a little terrified of being in the midst of so many librarians. Will they ask questions I can’t answer? Will they know, just by the look of me, that I sometimes dog ear pages? What if I’m not erudite enough? What if *gasp* no one asks for a copy?

Good thing I have a couple of months to stress out about it.  Anyone else going to be attending or signing at the PLA in Portland?

I think I would be nervous too! But they are going to love you, and your book.

Libarians have a bad rap, don't they? No need to be afraid, they will love you.

When I was young, and a little (very) awkward, my town's librarian used to compliment me on my taste in books, how well I could remember characters, places and moments from a book, and she also told me that I was pretty. To this day, I remember and thank her for fostering my love of reading.

I guess I'm telling you this story to remind you that librarians love books. Otherwise, they would have become engineers.

I met lots of them at the Boston ALA (also with Flux) and they love you -

think about it, where would librarians be without writers?

Congratulations! You will wow them. Librarians are wonderful people who LOVE books, and TALK and SHOW books. Have fun!

So they get the books before I do? I ordered on Amazon the first possible day!
You will be great, don't worry!

Just tell them that you've slept in castles and such. Once they're distracted you can point at another librarian and go, "Oh my God, is she wearing the same cardigan?" It will totally work.

. . .I work at a public library. . .believe me, you have nothing to worry about. . .some of them are just not that bright. . .I'll trade my PhD in Common Sense for their MLS anytime.

I'm a librarian. They're not a bad bunch --some of them are actually quite nice -- and fun :) (Although I understand your stress) They're going to love both you and your book.
